After high school, he continued on to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a History minor.
After college, CJ enrolled into Valparaiso University Law School in Valparaiso, Indiana. Other duties during his time as vice president, CJ presided over committee chairs operating under the student bar association, attended university council meetings, and delivered the commencement speech at graduation. CJ also was a member of the Trial Advocacy Team at Valparaiso University Law School, where he traveled to Houston, Texas and San Diego, California to compete in national competitions.
During CJ’s summer breaks in law school, he was a 7/11 Intern for the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office. During his time there CJ represented the People of the State of Illinois while under the supervision of Assistant State’s Attorneys. He wrote motions, tried multiple bench and jury trials as well as conducting summary suspension hearings for DUI cases. This is where CJ gained valuable courtroom trial skills.
After CJ graduated with his Juris Doctorate from the Valparaiso University Law School in May of 2019, he passed the State of Illinois Bar Exam and became a licensed attorney. His first job as an attorney was at his Father’s office, the Law Office of Steven C. Haney where he was an Associate Attorney who made daily court appearances on felony, misdemeanor, and traffic cases defending his clients.
Following his time at his father’s office, he accepted a position with the Will County Public Defender’s Office where he was an Assistant Public Defender. During his time there he spent four and a half years defending his clients in felony, misdemeanor, and domestic battery cases. As the four and a half years went by, CJ became very passionate for defending his client’s rights, prepared and tried over 50 trials and hearings, and took the time to understand his client’s side of the story.
When CJ is not in the office, he enjoys golfing with friends and working out. He loves to travel to anywhere it is warm and his favorite place he has been is the Caribbean. CJ’s favorite movie is Lord of the Rings Trilogy, but he does like to watch movies and TV shows in his free time. CJ currently resides in Naperville, Illinois.
